Monarch scarf, outfits and a work trip (HELP PLEASE!)

A short post today due to being busier than usual.
Last night I broke my J Crew ban (again) and ordered the red Monarch scarf, which is the same print as the skirt:

I've almost bought this more times than I can remember, but I've managed to stop myself, in keeping with my promise to myself not to buy anything at full price.
Last night the scarf went on sale, so I pounced! The MAGALOG15 code is still valid for 20% off and free shipping, so it was not a bad price.
Don't think I won't be wearing it with the skirt!!
I probably would have ordered the matching sweater too, if it had been merino wool and a better price, but at $300 still it's not worth it.

The weather in Sydney has been channeling the UK: dreary rain and low skies. So, to cheer myself up, I've been wearing an abundance of colour.

Today's outfit: Black Country Road dress with J Crew mad bird sweater on top, old Lover leather jacket, old Dries van Noten boots.

I'm off to New Zealand at the weekend for a work trip - A conference at Auckland Uni, so will be pulling my hair out deciding what to pack. It's a 5 day trip, with one day back home, then off to the South Coast for 4 nights for the school holidays. The weather will probably be schizophrenic, plus I need an 'outfit' for an evening do! Eeeek!
I almost always end up over-packing for short trips. I find I need as many shoes as I would for a month-long trip. Not to mention the bucket load of slap I always carry!!

So, PACKING GURUS do you have any magic tips or tricks to help me be a minimal and organised packer?

  1. Yes, here's my top tip - don't pack too many shoes! As you've identified, this leads to heavy, overloaded baggage. I would do 3 shoes max, including the ones you're wearing. Probably one pair of heels, one pair of knee high boots, one pair flats (loafers/ ballet flats etc). You'll need one coat, then pack a lot of scarves. Choose a dress that can do double duty for night or day. Layers - tops/ skirts/ trousers. One large tote bag, and a clutch for evening... good luck!
Love your outfits, and good buy on the Monarch scarf. I've been avoiding the J Crew site like the plague. Of course went on Shopbop to see if they were having a sale (extra 25%off sale at the moment), and saw a top I wanted was heavily reduced. Which meant I threw in another dress I don't need but that is pretty for good measure. As my attempt at strategic buying didn't work so well with the jacket last week, I figured I should stick to what I'm good at...! xx

    1. 3 pairs of shoes are a good idea, but I think I may need 4.... Heels, running shoes, knee high boots and ankle boots. Summer is so much easier, shoe-wise!
I'll definitely take 1 coat and 1 jacket, then skirts, sweaters and jeans. I think I need two different evening outfits as I have to go to two dinners with the same group of people!

I haven't looked on Shopbop for ages! I'll have to go and have a look. I used to buy a lot from them. Hope your purchases are a success - please report back on them when they arrive!

  2. I love the monarch print! I'm so glad that you snagged the scarf in that print too. I wish that I could give you packing suggestions, but I think that I absolutely stink when it comes to packing. Have a great trip!

  3. Lovely colours to wear during dark days of winter!

I pack a couple of suits - so 2 pants and 2 skirts that go with the jackets, a couple of sweaters and an extra pair of shoes that goes with everything and i am done!

    1. Great packing strategy, Rose! I have no suits, but could easily mix and match blazers and skirts.... My problem is that it will be too cold for just a blazer, so I'll probably not bother with taking a jacket. I'm so impressed with your packing discipline!

    1. Two outfits! That is very, very impressive! I think I took about 8 outfits plus evening wear for my last overseas trip!! I am totally crap at minimalism in packing. I think I might try to whittle it down to 4 outfits..... But god it's hard!
It would probably be easier if I had a more corporate style job, as then I could just pack my uniform!

  5. No magic tips from me I'm afraid - I had to pay at the airport because my luggage went over the limit of 23kg ooops! I love packing, but at the same time it makes me very anxious. I apologised to all the bags and shoes I couldn't take!

Love a bargain - sounds like you pounced as quickly as I did on my denim satchel. At least you will be able to take that scarf, but I'm guessing not too many shoes, unless they are flats.....

    1. Haha Colleen, you sound like a kindred spirit! I'm almost always over my baggage limit when I travel. You'd have thought I would have learnt by new, as I travel a fair bit, but no. Luckily, most long haul flights have a 30 - 40kg limit. My baggage was a whopping 22kg over the limit when I flew back from Europe last year.... Luckily Singapore airlines didn't charge me excess baggage - I think I must have looked too pathetic or something!

    1. Thanks Jenny! I just hope I can stick to a more disciplined approach! I get all worried that I will forget to pack something, and end up desperately wanting to wear it! Daft, really, as I'll only be away for 5 days! I swear it is easier to pack for a 3 - month long trip than a short one!

    2. I'm so pleased to have got the scarf! I wear my punk floral one a lot, so I'm sure this one will get a lot of wear too!
Sydney winters are far milder than European ones - usually about a low of 10 overnight and about 18 degrees during the day. It's often sunny and lovely. However, this June has been foul: lots of rain, and lows of 6 degrees!! Most houses here (including ours) have no heating, so it's very chilly in our house!!

  8. I just realized one tip that I was reminded as I was told during packing. I am not a good packer so I had nothing to add but actually big ziplock bags are great for preventing wrinkling of fabrics and rolling things up are better than trying to preserve the no crease. My friend who tells me this does it with everything in the suitcase and it works a treat! I hope I got this to you in time!

  9. Did I miss the bus, has the train left, did the ship sail already? I do pride myself in efficient packing, especially for short trips, and did a few blog posts about that, though I should summarize at some point.

Love your yellow coat with the purple dress. If you're already off on your trip, stay safe, have fun and we'll talk to you when you get back!
