J Crew Review: Andie Chinos

On Monday I received the J  Crew Andie Chinos in Fatigue.
I ordered them way back in August, but they were back-ordered in my size.
I'm very pleased to report that they may well be my trouser Nirvana!!!!

For reference, I am a petite 157cm (5'2"). I usually wear P00 in J Crew bottoms, but Cafe Capris are too baggy in P00 around my flat bum and skinny hips.

I was a touch concerned that these pants would be the same, but they fit me almost perfectly!

I'd say that they run small to size for J Crew pants - great news for someone like me!!

Here are some pics. I must apologise for the terrible quality.

Worn here with J Crew cotton sweater in navy and Repetto flats.

My only slight gripe would be the length. I'd prefer a couple more cm longer, but I can probably let the hem down.

Here's a slightly better pic:
J Crew Schoolboy blazer, Drapey sailor top, Andie chinos and Acne Pistol boots

As you can see (I hope) they fit well in the legs and the hips, which is often an area that doesn't fit me well.

The fabric is a good, thick cotton that held its shape all day yesterday with no sagging in the posterior.

A few more pics showing them with different shoes.

And a Jackie cardigan.
I know it may seem as if all my clothes are from J Crew, but I promise you they aren't!!

Anyway, the outcome of this is that I'm going to order some in dark grey too!
They are such a good fit. I really hope that J Crew continue to make them. I would love some black ones too!!!

  1. So cute. I love how you styled them.
I usually buy petite cafe capris, but got these in the regular for a bit more length; I'm 5'3".
They are a little too long, but I like how they look rolled a couple of times. I found that I can also 'hem' them, by just turning the hemmed edge under a bit. It seems to stay in place.
I hope JC makes these a staple as well. They seem to fit me much better than the cafe capri.

    1. Thanks maryeb!! I was wondering if I should order the regular size - they have an inside leg of 28", which would be perfect on me - just a bit cropped, but not as much as the petite size.
My only worry is that they will be bigger in the hips and waist... I have some 00 regular Minnies that are significantly bigger in the hips and waist than my P00 ones, so much so that I can't wear them!

  2. So lad they were worth the wait! Love how you have styled them!

    1. Thanks Ina - are you going to get the navy ones? They are seriously great pants. I am going to order the dark grey ones too!

  4. Wish I had a flat bum... I have the opposite problem. Went bikini shopping yesterday, and as if that wasn't traumatic enough in itself, I ended up having to buy size 14 bikini pants... and a size 8 top!!! I do think the sizing of the bottoms is significantly off (I also bought some other seafolly bikinis that were size 10 in the bottoms, and they're actually larger than the 14's), but still.... If you're looking for a good fit for you in a bikini, you might want to check out Isola by Megan Gale. You'd probably be the only woman in Australia to fit the 8's comfortably.
Love the way you've styled the chinos, that schoolboy blazer looks really good on you too..... xx

    1. Nooo! That is just ridiculous! Bikini sizes are bloody daft - I dread trying to buy bikinis Sooooo much!
I might have a look at Megan Gale's brand, though, if the bottoms are so small!!

But seriously, having a flat bum is a bit annoying - skirts look kind of rubbish and a lot of pants look awful. I know it's not a great issue in the whole scheme of things, but I've always wanted a bigger bum!!!

On the subject of Schoolboy blazers, why don't you order a normal wool one to see if you like the fit, then stalk that $$$$ cashmere one 'til it goes on super sale?!!

  5. These are so flattering on you! I'm in the same boat with Heidi... there we are sailing off trying to find bottoms that fit us... I recently lost weight but do you think it could come off my derriere? No apparently not.
But excellent that these have a skinny fit and you wear them so well. A thicker cotton that doesn't sag? Yup I would definitely order them in the other colours if I were you!
Also I think you have amazing hair.

    1. Thanks Dani! the bum conundrum is funny, isn't it? I spent a lot of time and energy in my 20s and 30s trying to get a bum, but if I gain weight it goes straight to my gut and bust - not good or healthy!
I guess we're never really happy with our bodies, but I've resigned myself to having a flat bum now. It's good to find pants that don't flap around the buttocks!!!

Thanks for the hair compliment. I haven't been near a hairdresser for nearly 4 months in an attempt to grow it long. I've also stopped torturing it with an iron. It is rather wayward and wavy, but I'm getting used to it!

  6. Wowza, you look great in these. In everything, really, but these pants in particular are really flattering. I love how you wore them to work, I must try that! Well, after I procure myself a purple Schoolboy blazer :-)

    1. Thanks AB, you are very kind - I can promise you that I don't look great in everything at all - far from it!
These pants are good, though. Do you have them? Which colour?
I am almost certainly going to get them in dark grey too, although the navy looks lovely too. Hmm, difficult decisions.
I wish they came in black too…. Perhaps J Crew will re-cut them in different colours. That would be fab!

  7. Well I am def not going to be able to get those!! But at least you look great in them.

    1. Thanks N! It is v exciting to find pants that fit me. It rarely happens… Nudie and Acne jeans are about the only jeans that fit, but they're always about a metre too long!! I don't mind hemming pants, but getting them taken in is an expensive pain, so these are a great find for me!

  8. They look great on you! I agree that the hem could stand to be let down. I like them with the boots a lot.

You are 2cm taller than me :)

Agreed with Dani that your hair looks great.

I am also in the definitely have a bum and hips contingent. It doesn't bother me, but it is such a pain to find pants that fit and sometimes it's hard to get the visual line that I want in my clothing. And, if my weight fluctuates at all, it all goes there and then my hard-won pants don't fit. But we all have our fit woes, and it all just illustrates the fact that mass market clothing is made for some kind of imaginary body. So when you find what works, I agree, stock up!

    1. You're so right, Abby. Mass-produced clothes are produced for an imaginary body! I used to spend a fortune on getting pants tailored, but having found J Crew, this may not happen anymore!
I can't believe I'm taller than you! It's so rare for me to hear that - although in Europe I never used to feel particularly short. Here in Sydney I often feel like a midget. Some of my daughter's friends tower above me already at the age of 12!!!
Anyway, I took the plunge and ordered another pair in navy. The dark grey had already sold out in my size!!

    2. Funny that you say that, I guess I was more often very short in Canada compared to here.

My husband is medium height, and next to the Germans and Swiss, he looks really small, and next to other French guys he looks similar or tall!

  9. The pants are perfect on you!! Thank you very much for the review. I am really looking forward to receiving mine - I ordered them yesterday after weeks of indecision but they are backordered until October. I am 5'4" (163 cm) so I went for the regular size with the 28" inseam. I sometimes order the petite pants, but I thought a 26" inseam might be too short. Fingers crossed!

I agree with the others, your hair looks great!!

    1. Oh I'm glad you ordered them! I think the regular would be a much better length for you. I have short legs, but even on my short limbs the petite ones are a little short. What colour did you get? I really wanted the grey ones but they've sold out in my size, although I guess I could get them in Regular… I did order the navy, though. I think they'll be a good, neutral addition and will look good with a lot of my brighter tops.

Thanks for the hair compliment. I have done nothing at all to it (apart from the odd wash and leave to dry) since June!

You can have some of my curves, if you like.
Fat transplantation..... that'd be a good thing to develop!

  14. Hi Ruth, How did you go with Andies? Are you still happy them? I have a pair in navy and I am not sure if I keep them or not. Though I like the look initially, they seem to wrinkle too much...

    1. Hi gone_4_sense, 8 months on and I do still love them, although the hook closing at the waistband has broken!
Generally, I think they were a good purchase. I wear both pairs quite a lot.
I don't really notice them wrinkling, but perhaps that's because mine are quite a tight fit on me, so the creases are pulled out!!!
