Mid-life crisis?

A strange and somewhat shocking thing occurred last Friday. I woke up feeling quite normal. I had taken a day off work in order to get some chores done, and needed to go into the city to run some rather dull errands. I got my errands done, and had some time to kill before meeting J for lunch, so lured by loud, red 50% off Sale signs, I went into a shoe shop I have never been to before.
It is called 'Florsheim'. I don't think I've ever really noticed it before, as it's on a street I don't usually walk along.
Anyway, in I went. It was full of bargains.

I didn't really spot much of interest, being a bit of a hard nut to please with shoes.
However, on a high shelp, almost out of my line of vision, were a pair of flat, calf hair shoes.

Yes. Flat. Animal Print.
Two things that I never really wear.

I picked them up. They looked well-made for the price. They were reduced by a significant amount. And, they were in my size (36), which is quite a rarity. I decided to try them on.
I was still very sceptical that they would fit, as often size 36 is too big, but in an almost bizarre moment of serendipity, they fit!

I didn't buy them.

I left the shop and went to meet J for lunch.

But, as I'm sure you'd already guessed, 45 minutes later, I was back in the shop and the shoes were mine!
Mid life crisis or sensible, useful purchase? you decide!!

They are comfortable, and as many people always say, leopard really is a neutral.
Florsheim shoes. $79.50 reduced from $159.

Worn with J Crew Andie chinos, Zara top and Gorman coat

In other far more important news, NSW is burning :-(. Please send a thought for all of those who have lost their homes and the courageous firefighters who are working very bloody hard to stop the fires.

  1. Hi Ruth. I am in the U.S. and everytime I saw coverage of the fires I did think of you. Funny how I feel a personal connection to the city since following your blog. I will pray for a quick recovery to the area.
The leopard shoes look fab and I cannot believe you are questioning animal print;)

    1. Hi anon, thanks for commenting. I love the fact that blogs give us that connection with people and places that we've never met or visited. Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers.
Animal prints are a big step for me!

  2. Our entire church prayed this morning for NSW! We are thinking of you up here in Canada!
As far as the shoes, well you might guess I love them, they are perfect with those slim pants and yup they will go with everything. I think you'll wear them loads!

    1. Thank you Dani, and to your church. The news is not good. One of my colleagues left work early today to go and pack up his valuable and evacuate...
I just hope that the weather cools down and that high winds don't eventuate.
I am v pleased with my shoes!

  3. Hope this finds the fires under control and all safe and accounted for. Just not ready for leopard print yet. I do admire it on others I am just not quite there in level of sophistication. Soon I will have the confidence to pull it off :)

    1. Ina, even last month I think I posted about how I would never wear animal print. Hmmm. That's why I think it's a mid life crisis!

  5. Yes, leopard print and snakeskin are neutrals.
A lady needs a few fancy pairs of flats.
If you didn't buy them that would have been a travesty.

Re: the fires, they are awful. Even more so since we are not even in summer. I think this would be a good time to get Tony Abbott to have a massive rethink on his climate change stance.

    1. Thanks Cilla! You're right - they are a wardrobe classic!
The fires are just terrible, and the heat is shocking for this time of year. I dread to think what this summer is going to be like if it's like this in early spring.
Abbott really needs to stop ignoring science.

  6. Oh no, my heart sank to hear of NSW. To answer your question from another post, yes, we can get wildfires here when it's hot and dry and windy. We've packed up our cars when the air got too smokey and it hurt to breathe so I know how scary it can get. I am saying a prayer.

You are not having a midlife crisis, I think you're discovering your purr ... or is it growl? I think you're going to have fun with that.

    1. The smoke here is terrible at the moment. Asthma sufferers are being advised to stay inside. How is your hot weather? Has it abated yet?
      Thanks for your thoughts x

  7. I am very sorry to hear about the fires in NSW - I hope they are brought under control soon.

I don't think those count as midlife crisis shoes! You look great in them!

  8. The shoes are lovely and I've been following the fires, really awful, is the smoke billowing over to where you are?

    1. Thanks! Not as lovely as your mum's new RV's!
The smoke is awful, it's pretty bad in our area, but far worse to the west. We are all coughing away, but so relieved to be out of the fire's path.

  9. That's so terrible about the fires -- warm wishes from Germany. As for the shoes, I also don't really do flats or animal prints (I have, in fact, one pair of animal print heels and that is all) but I LOVE those shoes pictures with what you're got on above -- it looks really terrific.

    1. Thanks Monty - I've just started following your blog! I love reading about your adventures in Deutschland! We spend a fair bit of time there, as we often visit my in-laws in Austria - nice and close to Germany.

  10. Ruth - I love the shoes - I have been eying the jcrew darbys, so am jealous you snagged them at that price!

I have been thinking of you all the last day after seeing the fires on TV - it is so scary. Much love and prayers for the folks in that area - praying for rain!

    1. Hi Wendy, I'm sure you could find some cheaper ones than the J Crews - do you have Florsheim in Canada? They seem to be very reasonable. I figure that I should only really spend big $$ on shoes I'm sure I will wear for at least 5-6 years. If I do end up really embracing the leopard thing, I can always splurge later!

    1. Thanks so much, Shopping Celle. We're bracing ourselves for a day of high temps and strong winds, so there is an emergency alert in the fire-stricken area to evacuate. :-(

  12. Thinking of you and all others in the area, and praying for everybody's safety and quick recovery. Some terrible winds and drought in our area created fires over here some time ago, and it was terrifying. Please be safe!

  14. Bush fires are terrifying, I hope they get them under control - I didn't realise that a lot of firefighters are voluntary. On a lighter note, I LOVE the shoes, so glad you went back and bought them.

    1. HI Sulky! thanks for commenting - yes, a lot of firefighters are volunteers, some of them very young. They are doing an amazing job. I'm v pleased with the shoes too, and will no doubt wear them far too often. I'm already pondering the need of a leopard cardigan too!

  16. I haven't watched TV lately (well, not the news) so didn't know about the fire, it is always a frightening thing. Only once in my life it happened that the village where I was vacationing was surrounded by fire and it was super-scary. It also always strucks me as revenge of nature on humans, after all these centuries of technology we are still helpless in front of a fire.

I love the loafers, I thought they were Darbies at first. See, now you need that clutch.

    1. Fires are terrifying. We were caught by one in 2002, and had to drive 50km out of our way to get away from it. Luckily the house we had been staying in at the time wasn't damaged, but the fire came almost to the boundary.
YOu're right - I certainly need that clutch, and as mentioned above, I'm now lusting after a leopard print cardigan!
