October purchases and Halloween

Halloween chez nous isn't nearly as exciting as it is in Scotland (check out Bourbon & Pearls here to see how it should be done), but we try to make it a little festive for the children.
Back in England we never used to celebrate it. We have Bonfire night on November 5th, celebrating Guy Fawkes' failed attempt to blow up the House of Lords.

Anyway, in honour of the evening, the children made a creeper pumpkin (Creepers are from Minecraft, in case some of you don't have Minecraft-obssessed people in your family)

D dressed up as a creeper, too

While M went for a scary ragdoll thing:

I've decided to take stock of my purchasing each month, so I can see what I've bought, and perhaps change my habits in some small way.
This month has been excessive.
I did think I had been quite parsimonious, but in reality, I was deluding myself quite badly.
October purchases:
Gary Bigeni blouse
Gary Bigeni dress
Mid-life crisis shoes
But that's not all - I realised that I've also ordered a leopard belt and phone cover from J Crew that hasn't arrived yet - it was bought in October, but won't arrive till November. Does that make it a November purchase? I think not.
I also bought a leopard cardigan (I know, I know. Blue Booby's prediction that I will soon channelling Eartha Kitt is looking more and more likely to come true). The cardigan is courtesy of the lovely Ina, from Ina in Wonderland. I will model it once it arrives.

So, my October spending was rather high.
I will therefore have to rest for a while now.

Everlane silk blouse, J Crew Andie chinos,  Florsheim shoes

At any rate, the mid life crisis shoes are getting a lot of wear, as are the J Crew Andie chinos.

Hope you had/are having a good Halloween if it's celebrated in your area!

  2. Hi ruth,i think i bought a lot this month and i went a little overboard:)
The open cardi and the double zip sweater, the front embroidered tee, bien fait sweatshirt,a faux fur scarf and a (faux)leather skirt from anthro..
I have to stop for a little while too:)

Since we live in a tiny(5 houses) subdivision, our trick and treat will not be that much and i think the kids are a little dissapointed,as not all families are home.
    We wiill see!

I returned the Andie chinos, but i think i need them too. They look great on you.
Hopefully the cardi will arrive soon!

    1. Seems as if October was a big shopping month for a few of us!
I hope Halloween was good for your kids. It's not such a big deal here, but it's getting more popular.
The Andie chinos are seriously great. I wear them a lot!

  6. I think you did very well with your October purchases! All of them look wonderful and I think you will get lots of mileage out of all of them. My kids dressed up as firemen today and brought back a small mountain of candy.

PS. I second Blue Booby, would love to see you with all the leopard items!! ;-)

  7. I need to own up to my purchases too. Maybe we should all start a monthly purchases "linkup". I bet it would be embarrassing for me. Yikes.

    1. Ps: what you bought already paid for itself, so no guilt there, my friend!

    2. That's a good idea, AB. I think that actually writing down and taking pics of purchases makes me more aware of my consumption.
I'm going to do an end of month audit from now on.

    3. I definitely found that when I did a tally and photo documentation of all purchases a few days back, it felt like a real eye-opener. I will be interested to read your month end audits -- I am definitely going to do a 6 month audit, but I think monthly makes more sense from the keeping on top of things perspective.

  8. i have got leopard print shoes too - but i like them - its fun! but yes you keep saying you have a shopping ban yet you keep shopping me lady! :)

    1. Too true, although I'm not sure that I would ever do a total ban - just a period of time to get out of the habit. My challenge is stuff in November. December will be impossible due to Christmas, and I will need to buy birthday gift for j this month, but apart form that I aim to not buy any adornments for myself for the next 4 weeks.

  9. All excellent purchases and HOW CUTE are your kids?! My daughter went as Little Red Riding Hood Wearing The Wolf, she wore a red dress, head kerchief and an old fur coat. It was pretty funny.
I haven't bought anything for over a month and if I can do it you can do it dollface. And it's a new month and a fresh start for you! You go! My #1 advice is do not look at online sales, don't even look.

    1. Your daughter's costume sounds fabulous!
I am inspired by your discipline, and am going to do the same. You're right about online sales. They are evil.

  10. Agree with Dani above. I've been deleting the shopping emails before I open them. But I am getting my shopping fix from all the house stuff at the moment (plus its so expensive it is scaring me off clothes purchases. Plus I don't actually need anything clothes wise). But having said that October did see me purchase my D&G leopard print shoes, so that wasn't exactly frugal. Plus one week I was on an island without internet/phone access so I wasn't exactly able to shop that week.
I do love your leopard print shoes though -think they look perfect with your outfit. Just don't wear all your leopard print together and you'll be fine! Kids look cute in their outfits too xx

    1. Very good idea, Heidi! All junk emails actually go to a specific email account, so it's easy for me to ignore them. I think it shouldn't be too hard, apart from the Melbs weekend.... We will see. I don't even remotely 'need' any clothes at all, in fact I probably could never shop again and I'd be fine, apart from undies and worn out stuff! But it's never about need for me.....
I love your post on light fittings - have read but not commented yet. Such a great idea to commission ones - we may do this too, as our budget isn't very big.

  11. Your kids are funny and adorable. OK, call them your mid life crisis shoes if you must but how fabulous do they make all your outfits!

I have seen two leopard prints work together in the same outfit and always wanted to try. Can't wait to see you as Eartha ;)
