Pirate party, weekend etc

Having been a bit bah humbug about dressing up for our friend's 50th birthday (Pirate theme), I'm very relieved that I did get my act together. It was a big party, and people had gone to a lot of effort.
It was held in his garage, which is about 3 times the size of our house!!!
He had rented lots of stuff to decorate it: old boats, canons and other pirate paraphernalia.
The costumes were amazing.... some people have a very impressive collection of Pirate clothing in their wardrobes....

I'm afraid that due to an abundance of Champagne and Rum punch, very few pictures were taken.
There was some very inappropriate behaviour from one male. I think he may have had a very slow and remorseful Sunday.

On the way to the party:

I wore a J Crew stripey top, old baggy pants, leather jacket, plastic cutlass and bandana. I also had an eye patch, but it didn't last long......

Pic of the decorated garage. There was a live band and an abundance of booze...

Yesterday was a write-off.

Pic from Friday. Equipment silk blouse, J Crew Andie chinos, v old random striped blazer in hand, NEW mid-life crisis shoes and orange J Crew bangle.

I'm a late starter to the whole leopard-is-a-neutral gang, but after all the positive feedback on the J Crew printed calf hair belt, I've ordered one, so my leopard wardrobe is growing!

Did you have a good weekend? I hope you didn't drink as much rum as I did.

Quick Update:
EEK! I think I need a leopard intervention!
I've just ordered this too:
iphone case from J Crew
In my defence, I have a new phone on its way and no cover for it yet. So it's not really so terrible, is it??!

    1. Cilla, you are right. Snakeskin is certainly a neutral, as is Zebra!

  3. We went to a Halloween party Saturday. Danced so much we were actually sore today. Went as , politically incorrect I know, Mexican low riders...or bricklayers, your pick. Been a bit slow today. Next thing you'll be Eartha Kitt in head to toe leopard.

  5. Ruth, your costume looks great! Are those your L.K. Bennett shoes I spy?
Those Equipment blouses are really taunting me. I see them look beautiful on everyone and just can't seem to take the plunge. Are they a nice, thick silk that doesn't wrinkle, or are they closer to the Crew in quality?
Looks like you had a blast!

    1. Thanks AB, those are indeed the old LK Bennett shoes - they aren't too high, so are good for a standing up party!
I love Equipment blouses. I had one in the late 80s/early 90s that lasted for years, so I bought a couple of new ones 3 years ago. They are great - thick silk and lovely drape! I have no idea about J Crew ones, as I've never bought one. I did buy an everlane one recently! and I think it's pretty good too! although time will tell.
My only problem with silk shirts is that I stain them almost immediately upon putting them on! They don't wrinkle much at all.

  6. You are looking quite the vamp for that birthday party! The leopard shoes make your outfit and it's OK to have more, it's a neutral you know ;) I think all animal prints are neutrals and so is camo, lol.

I just got some leopard print corduroy pants ... don't ask.

    1. Leopard print cords sound amazing! You will totally rock them, I'm sure! On the way home I stopped at a consignment store and came dangerously close to buying a leopard pencil skirt..... It was only $25!
I really don't know myself anymore. The next thing you know I'll be wearing it head to toe and channeling Eartha KItt as BB predicted

  7. I really love those shoes, they definitely mix with "everything"! And yes the leopard belt will be great too... Great look for your pirate party... It is nice when people do effort to match the theme. I am not sure I would be good at that... Weekend was wet (really, so much rain!) and windy... but we did some nice work...

    1. Thanks Steph! Isn't it strange how one can suddenly start liking something after years of avoiding it! I'm really intrigued as to shat has prompted my change of heart.
Sorry to hear about your bad weather. I hope you don't get the awful storm that's over the UK.

  8. I love your pirate get up, but share your horror of the dress up party. I loath a costume and am a reluctant participant. Love that yesterday was a slow day for you...!
Go wtih the leopard vibe. You and I are in synch. I bought a pair of Leopard heels (50% off at Dolce so were bargaintastic), and then realised that they matched my iphone case (also heavily reduced due to me having an iphone 4 still). xxx

    1. Oh I do loathe costume parties, probably because I so rarely get to dress up that I resent a lost opportunity. If and when we have a big party, the theme will be glamour, and people can interpret that how they please!
Your heels sound great! Where did you get them from? Now I've taken the plunge I'm unstoppable!

    2. The heels are Dolce & Gabanna via Cose Ipanema's huge sale (a Melbourne boutique clearing all their D&G stock as D&G have opened a store in Melbourne now). I also tried on a leopard print coat (made of pony skin) that had a real 50's vibe to it - cropped sleeve, single breasted - it looked AMAZING. But it was $15,500, so needless to say I left it behind. When I went past 2 weeks later it was gone.. so some lucky massively cashed up person is walking around in, what should be, my coat! THere's a lot of leopard print in D&G this season. xx

  9. You look like one sexy pirate Ruth!! I am not attending any party this year as I don't have the energy to not only attend but find a costume so nice to see what everyone is going as on the Internet!

  10. How fun, good costume. I think the Pirate theme suits you very much, my Uncle at one time produced live action pirate shows in Australia, if you've ever been to one at a theme park there that's my Uncle Tom's work. Lucky him he was in Aus 3X a year!
Laughing about the leopard! You will love the belt and iphone cover.

    1. I've never been to a live pirate show in Aus! How fab that it was your Uncle Tom who produced them!
I'm impatiently waiting for my leopard haul to ship!

    1. Thanks, T. I really should be less grumpy about costume parties. They are very popular here... Not sure why. I just really like dressing up in my cocktail frocks rather than in fancy dress

  12. What a cute pirate. Hope jcrew doesn't get wind of the new uses for a striped shirt or the next catalog will feature models sporting a eye patch. Looks like a good time was had by all

    1. Haha! That would be so funny! I can just se the pirate styling - parrot on shoulder, eye-patch in some rare fabric sourced from an artisan Italian fabric mill and crystal encrusted cutlasses!
Maybe I should pitch it to Mickey....

  13. ooooh I'm yet to be invited to any party where I have to dress up in a costume (or a uniform lol) - maybe it has something to do with the fact that I don't have any children!

I love leopard print, I have a top and some shoes (I tweeted about my shoes the other day actually). I don't think I could go as far as to say animal print is the new neutral but it's certainly something I will be rocking over the next few months!

    Have a great week!

oh nearly forgot to say that I really enjoyed reading your comment on my exercise post, your regime blows mine out the window ha!

    1. Leopard is great! I can't believe I dissed it for so long!
Costume parties are very popular here for some reason, and not just for people with kids. Perhaps it's a Sydney thing? No idea...

And thank you for your great post on fitness - my regime is based on my physical and mental needs. If I don't do my daily walk and yoga, I get very twitchy and bad tempered! The daily yoga isn't very long or impressive, just 10 mins or so in the am and a bit during the day.

  14. Excellent pirate costume - good for you for dressing up and it sounds like it was quite the party! I also got into leopard fairly recently (all thanks to J. Crew, hah!) - I refuse to believe it is mid-life crisis! Must go take a look at that iPhone case, I missed seeing that!! ;-)
