Shoes, and how Net-a-Porter has ruined my shopping ban

In my previous post, I mentioned that I hadn't bought any new clothes since the end of October. This is true, but I have bought some new shoes.

While my wardrobe is quite comprehensive, I feel there's still some room for new shoes (I know, I know), so when I spied these Chie Mihara sandals in my local boutique, Pretty Dog, I got that shoe feeling.... you know, the excitement, the already planning outfits, the general 'new shoe high' that some of us get (do you?)

They're higher than any other shoes I own, but have a slight platform and lovely padding on the ball of the foot, so while they aren't super comfy walking shoes, they're fine for a sitting day or a night out.

Chie Mihara Japan sandals, J Crew Andie chinos

The colour is a taupey-grey shade, with dark navy/black inserts at the toe:

Worn here with black Acne jeans, Gorman stripey knit and very beachy hair.
J was quite enamoured of them, which is unusual for him, but he has made me promise to throw out a couple of pairs of sandals that he hates, so I'll be doing that this weekend.

Something else happened quite unexpectedly the other night. I'm blaming Net-a-Porter and *Heidi from An Adelaide Villa.

About 5 months ago, in a moment of boredom, I played 'fantasy shopping' on Net-a-Porter and created a wishlist of all the things I'd buy if I had a money tree. I do this from time to time, but rarely ever buy anything from my list, as practicality and budget get the better of me.

On tuesday night, the Luxury Shopping gods sent me a sign (I'd been reading Heidi's post on her NAP shopping success and NAP sent me an email, too).
The sign told me to login to my NAP wishlist to see if anything was on sale, and hey presto:

I think you can probably guess the rest.
$1728 reduced to $417. How could I resist?

It hasn't arrived yet, so no idea if it will fit or even work for me, but with NAP's fantastic free returns, it really doesn't matter if it's a no go.
So much for the shopping break.

Have you ever had a sign from the shopping gods?
Do you get that shoe feeling?
And how's your new year going so far?

* Sorry Heidi! I don't blame you really!!

  1. i cant wait to see the dress on - as HL goes it looks like a good one. Yes Heidi is a very good scout and introduces different shoes or dresses one would not have considered! I did buy something but it was a piece of furniture and I justify it becuase I can rationalize home purchases and it will always be with me...But boring compared to your dress and nice shoes.

    1. I really should be focussing on house purchases, but there seems no point until the renos are underway... I hope the dress works out. I have an HL dress from 2003 that I love - it's black and less body-con. This one is very dark navy, which I love, so at least it's not another black dress!

  2. LOVE that dress! Now, let's see the photos. :)

  3. My comment just got eaten:(
I am starting again.Ok i love both of your picks. The shoes will be versatile with their color amd shape and i think if the dress fits,it will be a great LBD.
The shoppinggods from NAP were nice to me too,as they send me 60 euro vouchers for "giving mybopinion" twice.
One time i got Hunterboots with that free cash and one time a nice tee, that i wouldnt have bought myself otherwise.

    1. NAP sent me a voucher last year too - I've bought a fair amount from them over the years, but am probably a very moderate shopper in comparison to some!
The dress is actually dark navy, not black! As I already have 15 black dresses (cough cough) this is probably a good thing!

  4. I am predicting that the dress will be massive win, look at the lines of it! And such a deal! It had to be done.
I love a Chie Mihara sandal, so comfortable and very good quality, you'll get so much wear out of those. My favourite high heels are Chie Mihara!
I get so many signs from the shopping gods, we have a direct connection!

    1. Thanks Dani - I'm hoping so too. I'm a big fan of boat necks - they suit my frame and tend to minimise my bust. I also love that it's quite demure compared to some HL dresses (which can look a little lacking in elegance IYKWIM)
Chie Mihara makes a fabulous shoe - I've had some before, but a long time ago and they didn't make the last move.
I'm very pleased with them so far and am planning to wear them with the new dress if it works out.
      Fingers crossed it arrives today!

  5. The shoes are amazing, very sexy yet demure IYKWIM. Chie's are always comfortable and not trendy so you can wear them for years, at least I do. The shoe high is intense for me, nothing else even comes close although handbags do give me great pleasure, but it's not the same as shoes!

Gorgeous dress and a great price. Sometimes you can't ignore the signs!

    1. Thanks xoxo! Sexy and demure is exactly the look I'm going for with the shoes and the dress.
You're right about the shoe high - I find that the love of shoes endures long after the love of clothing dims. Shoes are just a lovely indulgence!

  6. oops! Sorry about helping you break your shopping ban! But that is an amazing dress, and you'll look so fab in it. Love your sandals too. I'm trying to do a one in/one out thing now. And I've recently chucked a few things, shoes especially that had gone past their use by date. It made my husband happy! I did a bit more sale shopping last night.... I bought an evening dress on NAP that was 70% off (actually it came down cheaper when I put it in my shopping bag so was more like 75% off. For $400 for a full length dress with beading (I have two charity balls to go to this year, it's a Notte by Marchesa), it seemed like a good buy. But no success with shoes for me sadly, and that was what I was specifically looking for. Enjoy your new sandals - you're going to get a lot of wear out of them, I'm sure! xx

    1. tee hee! The ban is still in place, but sometimes you just can't overlook a big bargain like that - and if it's not perfect it can go back. That's the great thing about NAP - it's so easy to return and they have the best customer service ever.
Very excited to see and hear about your sale purchases when they arrrive. NAP is usually very fast. The Notte dress sounds amazing, and perfect for a ball - sadly I have no balls to attend, so no need for a full length dress, but am looking forward to vicarious thrills through you!
Keep on looking for the shoes - I'm sure some will appear at some point. Have you look at Bally? they often do very comfy mid-heels

Must go over to your blog to stalk your purchase!

      Dress is navy, not black!

  8. It's a beauty, if it works you'll have that forever. I honestly don't see that much that I like, I can go for a long time before something seduces me into buying it.

    1. Tabs, you have exquisite taste and your wardrobe reflects your moderation and discipline. I am working on these aspects of my wardrobe, but it's hard!!
I have high hopes for the dress, but there is always the chance that it will be too eastern european hooker on me... due to my bust and all.

  9. The shopping gods just recently gave me a sign and encouraged me to spend several hundred dollars. I have a trip to the States coming up and a load of goodies waiting in a colleague's office for me. Ah well. I will be very interested to see what the dress looks like on -- it looks gorgeous from the stock photo. I have actually never even logged into net-a-porter and now I think I probably should not ... 1. Very exciting to have parcels awaiting you! I hope everything works out and that you have a fab trip!
I'm hoping it looks half as good on me as it does on the mannequin. I'm about 5 inches shorter and haven't got those long limbs, but we'll see!
NAP is a great site, especially at sale time. You could always have a little look...!

    2. Hmm, actually I'm about 8 inches shorter!!

  10. Lovely choices Ruth! I am being absolutely ruthless about the no shopping (no pun intended!) I do not go into clothing stores or shoe shops here in town nor will I allow myself any online visiting of sites - until I get a good handle on my wardrobe and my bad habit of shopping for no reason I am trying to be really good!! I love the dress especially - I can't wait to see you in it!

    1. Thanks Wendy! good for you being ruthless - it's the only way. I was finding it super easy until I received 'The Sign'. My next purchases will be at the end of Feb or March when I start thinking about cashmere for winter. This year I'll be replacing some basics and perhaps adding a new pair of boots. eek.

  11. Yes, Ruth, I always get the same new-shoe high. Always. I love the buckle detail and the heel. Shoes are always a good buy. The HL dress will surely suit you. I used to sell them in Harrods moons ago and they're always sold out. Looking foward to seeing your photos wearing it :)

    1. The new shoe high is a great feeling. HL dresses have a bit of a cult following, don't they? Some of them are a bit too sexy for me, but I'm hoping this will be fine as it's not short and isn't low-cut!

  12. I love shoes, especially open toe shoes! I can never have too many shoes. I can't believe that you agreed to get rid off shoes just bc your j first like them lol. I have the same debate with my h, but he knows that shoes are sacred to me.
Your new pair is gorgeous. Wear them in good health.
The dress looks so pretty. I hope it works out!

The ones I've promised to throw out are very old and not comfy, so it won't be a great loss. J know better than to try to manage my wardrobe!

  13. There's only one thing on my NAP wish list and its price hasn't budged. Don't know whether to envy your luck or to breathe a sigh of relief. And I am a slave to Chies, the Great Chie Store In The Sky is having a sale itself - the very factory in Spain. Trying to hold out.

    Happy New Year!

    1. What's on your wishlist? Hope the price budges soon. NAP prices can be scary, but their sales are amazing, and I love the fact that sale items can be returned, unlike some retailers we know!
Must have a look at the GCS in the Sky

  14. That dress will be smashing if it fits. Before a little research enlightened me, I would have protested the 'sandal' description of your new shoes. Hubs is quite right as they are fab.

    1. I really hope it does fit - it may be too tight, as the measurements are verging on the tight side. Apparently, one should buy HL dresses to be tight, though, as they are meant to act as a bandage wrapped tightly around! Sounds a bit scary.... Will post pics when it arrives if it's not too embarrassing!
