The horror of a broken zip

I am distraught, bereft, disappointed and many other extreme emotions.
My much anticipated and deeply discounted Herve Leger dress has arrived, but is faulty!!!

I was so excited when it arrived! I opened the box and held it up against myself. It looked small (I ordered xxs as the site recommended for my measurements), but perfect in terms of cut and colour. It's a beautiful deep navy blue, with a double zip down the back and a demure boat neck.

However, my anticipation and excitement were short-lived. J assisted me into the dress, but once he had got the zip down, he realised that it wouldn't go back up.

The zip was faulty!

The end of the zip was crooked and didn't match up properly. You can see in the pic below the difference in the hem:

I'm not brave enough to attempt to fix this, so with great regret, the dress is going back today to see if it can be fixed or not.
It has sold out on NAP, so unless someone else returns one in my size or the NAP folks can magic the zip back to normal, I think this dress is just not meant to be :-(

There are no pics of me wearing it as I never did get to do up the zip - I think it would have fitted and looked good..... On the positive side, it means that I can return to my previous smug state of not having shopped since late October.

Have you experienced a clothing malfunction?
Any experience with broken zips?
Should I have attempted to mend it or did I do the right thing returning it?

  1. Oh definite return! That's quite a serious defect. Too bad but as you point out it has wiped clean your record...
I saw Saving Mr. Banks today, I hadn't realized it was partially filmed in beautiful Aus, I thought of you and Heidi and FF!

    1. You're right, Dani. It has gone back and I'll probably get a refund.
I haven't seen saving Mr banks yet - it is on up the road so we must try to go!

  2. Well darn it! I am rather disappointed also. Was very much looking forward to the glorious pictures. Nevertheless, way to go on your abstinence, I guess:)

    1. It is a shame. I had already planned to wear it to a couple of dos. Oh well. It's not as if I don't have other things I could wear, but you know that thing when you get an outfit into your head?

  3. Oh so sad! I bet someone returned it because of the faulty zipper and it got sent back out again. Probably someone too big for it trying to squeeze into it :)

    1. I reckon you could be right. It does seem a little suspicious that it was so damaged, especially if you consider how super $$$ it was at full price.

  4. No!!! Zips are serious though and not as easy to fix as one might think...especially on leger dresses where zips are rather important. I hope they can fix it for you. They might try because otherwise it is a complete loss for them so fingers crossed!

    1. Yes, the zip is pretty major. Oh well. It's really quite an insignificant thing when compared to your renovation issues! Just a bit disappointing...

    1. Yes, it's the downside of online shopping , isn't it? I remember your hunt and disappointment with J crew dresses last summer.

  8. Oh nooooooo! I'm so sad for you. It's always better to return a faulty item. I regretted buying a Missoni scarf on The Outnet, as the damn thing unravelled the first time I wore it. I loved the colours in it, so I didn't contact The Outnet, but snipped off the unravelling thread thinking it would probably be ok. No, it is not. It unravels every single time I wear it (and I'm not snagging it on anything. It's just self destructing). So I definitely regret not returning it the first time. Lesson learnt for me. Fingers crossed the NAP people can fix it! xx

    1. I'm glad I've returned it but I really wish it had worked out. Sorry to hear about that Missoni scarf. It's hard to return something when you really love it.
Any luck on the shoe front? I saw your returned D & G shoes in DJs yesterday for some outrageously inflated price and the toe cleavage is extreme!

    2. how interesting re DJ's! We don't have D&G in the Adelaide store (very poor selection of the basic Christian Louboutins, lots of Ferragamos and a couple of pairs of Bally to round it out). But I did look at the 'new' season Max Mara coats and anorak things, which you can buy significantly cheaper on Matches when (actually) new, and they're now reduced as end of season so... a $1050 coat is $360 on Matches. No luck on the shoe front. But the Notte dress arrived today and fits well, so I'm pleased with that! xx

    3. Oh so pleased the Notte dress has worked out! Would love to see pics! $360 for Max Mara is amazing! Are you going to get one? I tried a jacket on recently in Max Mara and it was lovely, but a bit too wintery for Sydney.
Have you picked up your CD dresses yet?

    4. all the small sizes are gone now on Matches, sadly! They've got the spring new stuff in though on Matches, which I think would work well for Australian Winter in Sydney, and most of Adelaide's Winter (although it can get pretty cold here...) and even at full price it's around $300 cheaper on Matches than DJ's. Will post some pics on the blog once I can bear being in a long dress for long enough to take a photo - did a very quick try on this morning - over 42C today! Saw the coats in DJ's when I was picking up the dresses - reduced by 40% so I saved a bit (although spent a lot to get the saving!). xx

  9. Oh dang it, was all ready to see you in that wowee dress! Double zips are a great idea but so very tricky. I hope it works out.

  10. Oh what a bummer, I hope they will try to fix it but I think Net a Porters customer service is appalling, it's the worst out there.

    1. I haven't really had much experience with their customer service, but when I've returned stud in the past it's been quite simple. Are they rubbish with faulty stuff? I'd love to hear about your experience. Forwarded is forearmed and all ....

  12. I hope they will fix it for you, but if they can't there will be another gorgeous dress around the corner. That's what I tell myself when a highly anticipated purchase doesn't work out.
