Birthdays, anniversaries and an ode to J Crew

February is a very birthday-ful month.
Firstly, my father turned 82 this week. He isn't in great health, and in fact was in hospital earlier this week after falling down and injuring his head. Happily, it wasn't serious, so was back home for his birthday.

This blog turns 1 year old on 19th Feb, I turn 46 on 27th Feb and four other friends also have birthdays, so it's a social old month.
My parents will be celebrating their 56th Wedding Anniversary on 21st Feb.

Exactly 1 year ago today, I had surgery on my ankle and foot to repair a ruptured peroneal tendon. The resulting recuperation was what prompted me to start a blog. I had 6 weeks of no walking at all - pure torture - so instead of getting all cross and grumpy, I took my morphine and started a blog. I'm shocked how quickly the year has passed. My ankle is now perfectly back to normal and I'm still writing the blog, although perhaps not as much as when I was under house-arrest!

J Crew keyhole top, Jackie cardigan, Zara jeans. J crew knit and skirt, APC sandals. J Crew knit, Nudie jeans and J Crew belt.

Recent outfits. Looking back on these makes me realise why I love J Crew still. Almost all my work staples are from J Crew. Despite their silly prices, sometimes crappy quality and daft copywriters, their skirts and tops still make up a big part of my wardrobe.

J Crew skirt and knit. J Crew tee and skirt.

I've not been so excited about any of the recent new arrivals at J Crew, but I am very happy with my previous season's purchases. It makes getting ready in the morning very easy knowing that I can just grab a skirt and top and they'll probably look good together.

Is there one particular label that you rely upon for daily outfits?

  1. It is indeed a birthday month as the 'Estella' of my life turned 50 today. I've had 3 separate consoling phone calls thus far reminding her how well she's holding up and how I'll be joining her before long. With your very fit figure, J Crew is a natural, although they do (as you mention) try to sneak some substandard garbage through from time to time. Please spend well those last few days, weeks, months, with your father as you'll never get them back.

    1. Belated birthday wishes to your 'Estella'. 50 is a great age to be, I reckon. I am trying to spend as much time as possible with my father. Old age is truly awful...

  2. J Crew is great for work outfits, they take all the thought out of it.
Hmm, no one label for me for clothes, just more whatever is stretchy and comfy and I can move in for every day wear.
That's great that your Dad got home in time for his birthday, I wish parents could live for ever.

    1. I wish they could live forever too, but in good physical and mental health. My father is getting terribly confused these days, which makes him furious. Hard for him and also very hard for my mother.

  3. Happy birthday to your dad, you and your blog, and happy anniversary to your parents! You have a lot of celebrating to do this month! :)

My staples are all J. Crew, I'm afraid.

    1. It's a busy month - plus we have an old University friend visiting, who hasn't really settled down at all!

  4. Happy almost birthday to you, and best wishes to your dad. My work staples are all Boden, Anthropologie, J Crew and Ann Taylor (today I am wearing not one thing from any of those retailers, which is kind of an amazingly exceptional event). I agree with you generally -- say whatever you will about J. Crew, but I am perfectly happy with what I have from them as a general matter and turn back to them from time to time when I consider something new.

    1. Hi MDD, I'm about to do a very small Boden order for the first time ever, so will be able to see if their stuff fits and suits me. I've never bought from Ann Taylor or Anthropologie... will have a look at them too.
I can't follow your blog anymore as it asks me for a password! Any idea why? I loved your blog!

    2. I have just sent you the password -- thanks for your kind words! Ann Taylor is fairly mid-stream corporate; Anthropologie a mix of fun & different or a bit twee.

With the Boden order, do definitely check out the garment measurements.

  5. Happy Birthdays and Anniversaries and Valentine's! Very glad your dad is okay and back home. I agree with Tabitha, I wish parents would live forever. I shop J Crew mostly for their staples...I love the vintage v neck tees and v neck cashmere sweaters. Just wish they would include regular pants instead of all the capris. I see we are now going to get culottes this fall. Ugh.

    1. Thanks BB! I love their vintage tees too. Their pants are not good on me, but I love the cotton v neck sweaters and pencil skirts, as you know only too well!

Culottes are just so wrong :-(

  6. Happiest of birthday to one and all. I must echo GSL - treasure all these days with your dad now!

You always look so great in J crew! Now that I am not working outside the house I am still somewhat flailing about style. I think I have it solved and then I realize I miss the dressing up!

    1. Hi Wendy, I am trying to make the most of the time. Going to work outside the home makes it much easier to find a 'uniform'. I used to work from home several days a week when the kids were babies and it was much harder to decide what to wear!

  9. Happy birthday to you and yours, and congrats on the 1 year blog anniversary! I still remember the photos you posted of your ankle post-surgery. Very glad to hear your father is recovering, I hope he is back up to full speed soon.

Love your outfit retrospective, you look beautiful!! Most of my wardrobe is still J. Crew, but I have been branching out a bit to Vince and Club Monaco. I have not been so impressed with J. Crew's more recent offerings.

    1. Thanks Louise. I am shocked how quickly the year has gone - at the time it felt as if I would be unable to walk for years, and yet it went by super fast!
It's interesting looking back at the year via the blog. It gives a totally different perspective on life.
I've never tried Club Monaco - not sure where I woujld find it online, but will have a google

  10. Happy birthday to you and your dad. Feb is a massive month for you! Congrats on 1 year of the blog too!! I adore your outfits and love for J.Crew. I too am a big J.Crew lover and it would make up the majority of my work wardrobe. The rest is made up of vintage and Zara. Have a great weekend x

  12. Hi Ruth, first time to comment. Best wishes on this special month. You have the same birthday as my brother so I will remember. I really like how you dress. I love the classic, unfussy silhouettes that make the most of your figure. You make Jcrew pieces look good (but loving your A.P.C.'s more). I will be going to your part of the world sometime in September and would love to get some recommendations on the must-sees for a three-day stay.

    1. Hi Marie - thanks so much for visiting and commenting, and moreover, how exciting that you're coming to Aus! I'd be very happy to send you some recommendations - let me know if you'd like me to email you or I can just post some suggestions here.
APC are great, although I don't buy many of their clothes, mainly shoes and boots.

    2. Thanks Ruth, I think posting in your blog may also help others who are thinking of visiting too. I loved your Melbourne posts. But no rush, only when you find the time.

  13. Hard to believe it has been a year. So glad that you are able to wear proper shoes now. I finally got that green clover tweed skirt on popback recently. I have been wanting it forever and plan to pair it with the punk floral scarf.

    1. Hi SC - so glad that you managed to get the green skirt - it will look fab with the punk floral scarf!
I'm going backwards and forwards on the rosewood skirt currently on J Crew site. It looks lovely, but am worried about the fabric… will have to ask around on the JC blogs to see if anyone has seen it in real life.
