A week of goodbyes

This week is shaping up to be a bit of an over-emotional one.
An old University friend has been staying with us - we hadn't seen him for over 20+ years, but the time melted away as soon as we met him again. It's amazing how some people feel just as close as they always have, despite decades of little contact.
It was as if the past 24 years had disappeared and we were back in 1989 hanging out in our old flat. Anyway, he's now gone back to Thailand, so we're feeling a bit flat.

Even more awful is the fact that one of my bestest girlfriends and her family are moving overseas today for a year. The lead up has been very busy for them, as they've had to pack up two houses and get rid of a lot of stuff. I think we've all been in denial about how sad their departure will be. Their son is D's very close friend, and we spend a lot of time with them, so their move is going to be hard on everyone. We will visit them this year, finances permitting, but we're feeling pretty bereft.

The rest of the week will be an antidote to these events, I hope. I'm taking a couple of days off work to celebrate my birthday, and have a few events lined up, including a massage and dinner on Saturday with a bunch of friends in one of my favourite Sydney venues.
We will toast absent friends and be grateful that we will see them again soon.

Outfit yesterday: J Crew skirt, Jac & Jack cotton sweater, APC sandals, Cutler & Gross sunglasses and Coach bag

Gorgeous early birthday present from my divine friend C, who is off to live abroad for a year today!
I'll miss her lots and lots....
I'm not usually one to mope around feeling sad or sorry for myself, but for some reason I'm feeling particularly blah today.

How are you? How do you deal with friends moving away or other periods of blahness?

Thank you!

Very brief post today to say a huge Thank You to everyone who follows, reads or comments here!

It's been exactly 1 year since I started blogging, and I'm thrilled to have 'met' so many wonderful people through this and other blogs!
Although I'm sporadic on my posting, and perhaps not as quick to reply to comments as I could be, I really appreciate the fact that people read and take time to comment here!

It's been a great year - it started with surgery and 2 months of not walking, and here I am, fully back to normal.
I really had no idea when I started this blog, that I would get even a few followers, let alone the 40 or so I seem to have!

J Crew tee, Leon & Harper jeans, no brand jacket and Repetto shoes

Gorman dress, L'Autre Chose sandals, old scarf
Here's to another year of self-conscious shots in my work loos and blurry outfit photos!!

And thanks again for reading!

Birthdays, anniversaries and an ode to J Crew

February is a very birthday-ful month.
Firstly, my father turned 82 this week. He isn't in great health, and in fact was in hospital earlier this week after falling down and injuring his head. Happily, it wasn't serious, so was back home for his birthday.

This blog turns 1 year old on 19th Feb, I turn 46 on 27th Feb and four other friends also have birthdays, so it's a social old month.
My parents will be celebrating their 56th Wedding Anniversary on 21st Feb.

Exactly 1 year ago today, I had surgery on my ankle and foot to repair a ruptured peroneal tendon. The resulting recuperation was what prompted me to start a blog. I had 6 weeks of no walking at all - pure torture - so instead of getting all cross and grumpy, I took my morphine and started a blog. I'm shocked how quickly the year has passed. My ankle is now perfectly back to normal and I'm still writing the blog, although perhaps not as much as when I was under house-arrest!

J Crew keyhole top, Jackie cardigan, Zara jeans. J crew knit and skirt, APC sandals. J Crew knit, Nudie jeans and J Crew belt.

Recent outfits. Looking back on these makes me realise why I love J Crew still. Almost all my work staples are from J Crew. Despite their silly prices, sometimes crappy quality and daft copywriters, their skirts and tops still make up a big part of my wardrobe.

J Crew skirt and knit. J Crew tee and skirt.

I've not been so excited about any of the recent new arrivals at J Crew, but I am very happy with my previous season's purchases. It makes getting ready in the morning very easy knowing that I can just grab a skirt and top and they'll probably look good together.

Is there one particular label that you rely upon for daily outfits?

The Emperor's new clothes?

I like to think that I am an open-minded, fashion-forward kind of person. I love clothes and can happily click away the hours admiring various genres of style and sartorial garb.
Even if I don't wear a certain style myself, I like to think that I can appreciate a wide variety of fashion whims.
However, recent items on Net-A-Porter are making me question myself.
Perhaps I am too old and cynical, but the following items really do make me wonder:

Thongs (flip-flops) are a beach staple in my wardrobe. But not ones that cost over $30 or so. But they're Valentino, so they must be worth it? right?

Dungarees. A worker's staple. These at $578 just scream overpriced scam to me, as do the espadrilles.

Perhaps I should støp here. I just can't understand that headband or hat for that price. Ditto the tie-dyed chiffon jumpsuit.
And my daughter who is 12 has some lovely neon cut-off shorts that cost $15 from Target.
I'm dead certain that J Brand are paying their seamstresses a decent wage..... well at least let's hope they are.
And don't even get me started on those Kenzo sweatshirts.....

Anyway. Apologies if anyone is planning to purchase any of the above. Put it down to me being a cynical old git.

To end on a happy and less bitchy note, here's a pic of the view down to Bronte beach yesterday.

What gets your goat in fashion?
Hope you're having/have had a great weekend!

Blue

Do you have a go-to colour? One that you always gravitate towards?
Navy blue seems to be on my radar at the moment. I used to buy hoards of black items, and black was my go-to colour for almost all basics, but recently I've eschewed it in favour of blue.

The beach was pretty crowded this past weekend. Even though I've lived in Sydney for 15 years now, I still get a huge thrill out of the beautiful city beaches.
This is Bronte Beach, one of our favourites:

You can't see from this photo, but the surf is pretty scary here. This is a safe rock-pool area where we usually swim. Just to the left of the photo there was a huge rip and the surf-lifesavers had to pull a couple of tourists out of the water!

I've been avoiding the J Crew website for a while now, but had to have a peek at the new Spring stuff.
There are a couple of skirts that caught my eye. The one above in particular.
Has anyone seen this in the flesh?
Any thoughts?
It's a bit steep, price-wise but I am a total sucker for a graphic print. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Another question: Do any of you ever buy Boden stuff? Is it any good? I notice they have a petite range and am sort of pondering whether or not to order a couple of things at some point.

Hope you're having a good week, and for those of you suffering in the polar vortex, fingers crossed for some warmer weather soon!
